Firewall alert
ZoneAlarm is a well-regarded personal firewall product offered by Zone Labs. Like most firewall software, it alerts the user to any hacking attempts on your computer. Significantly, it also alerts on outbound attempts, when an unrecognized program seeks to access the Internet. The firewall that Microsoft includes in Windows XP lacks outbound protection, highlighting the need for firewall protection beyond what it offers. In ZoneAlarm, access requested by any program can be allowed or denied. The user can easily specify preferred inbound and outbound access privileges for various programs either as each seeks access for the first time, or at any later time. The free version of ZoneAlarm is generally recognized as a fine firewall, and is a very popular download. Zonelab's business model is to continue to improve the free basic model while offering upgrades with more features for a price.
There are five different versions of ZoneAlarm:
- ZoneAlarm (Free) - The free basic edition includes a a web and local network firewall with outbound program control and significant configurations flexibility. The free version makes your computer invisible to probes from the internet unless you specify to the contrary.
Zone Alarm Free
- ZoneAlarm Pro - This edition comes with much more features than the free version. It has more configuration options and a powerful identity & privacy protection. This version automatically stops pop-up ads, prevents personal data from leaving your computer without permission, looks for and deletes adware cookies, and blocks adware cookies but allows cookies from trusted sites. From version 6 onwards, it comes with an Operating System Firewall feature that monitors the processes in Windows for suspicious and dangerous behaviour and has an anti-spyware scanning engine that was developed in house by Zone Labs.
- ZoneAlarm Antivirus - Comprehensive Antivirus Protection - Secures your PC from viruses, worms, and other security threats, automatically updates protection from the latest virus threats, and protects your PC from unknown, emerging viruses. Automatically scans for viruses and removes them. It also monitors outgoing email and halts messages with potential viruses. It also makes your computer invisible to hackers. From version 6 onwards, it also includes the new OSirewall feature.
- ZoneAlarm Antispyware - A stripped down version of ZoneAlarm Pro: it has all the features of ZoneAlarm Pro except for the privacy and identity theft features.
- ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite - Includes all the features of the above products, and includes IMSecure Pro (see below) and an antispam filter engine provided by MailFrontier.

- IMSecure - IMSecure protects your AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, ICQ, and universal clients such as Trillian, keeps your personal ID safe, and stops virus threats. IMSecure comes in two editions (Basic and Pro). Pro has more security options while the basic edition just keeps IM conversations private and provides protection to vulnerable IM connections.
Version 6.0 spyware controversy
In 2006, InfoWorld Senior Contributing Editor James Borck discovered that ZoneAlarm Security Suite 6.0 continued to send encrypted data to four servers even after the user had disabled all of ZoneAlarm's communications options. See this article.
ZoneLabs had been accused of such an act in an early version and Steve Gibson defended ZoneAlarm here.
The current issue has caused a rumour that the Israeli government may be using ZoneAlarm to spy on people, since Check Point Software, the parent company of ZoneLabs, is an Isreali company. However "Iggy," a member of ZoneLabs Team Z help program, made this comment. He feels that the rumour is false [1]. One reasons is: "Why would Check Point target end-users when they could gain more valuable information by placing the "bug" in their enterprise products for companies?"
On the 24 Jan 2006, ZoneLabs posted a message on the official ZoneLabs user forum[2] saying that after working with James Borck, it was discovered that the communication was an encrypted GET request used by the program to check if ZoneAlarm was up-to-date, and that this was a bug. The bug has been fixed in version 6.1.744.000 which was released on 1st Mar 2006.
Discontinued products
- ZoneAlarm Plus - This product was discontinued from late 2004. This was due to the fact that the product which was similar to ZA Pro except that it lacked privacy and antitheft features and was sold for almost the same price. Hence users were getting less features for the same price. Users of ZoneAlarm Plus were offered a free upgrade to ZA Pro when the product was discontinued.
- ZoneAlarm Wireless Security - This product was discontinued from October 19, 2005. This was due to the fact that Zone Labs added the automatic wireless PC protection feature to its paid offerings from the version 6 line of its products which was released around October 2005 too. Again this would cause users to be getting less features for an almost similar price to its other offerings. Users of ZoneAlarm Wireless Security were offered a free upgrade to ZoneAlarm Antispyware.
